The Paper
I wake up and Tessie gets excited. She comes up to me with a toy in her mouth and I laugh but tell her not right now. I look at the clock. 6:00. I hear footsteps.
“It’s too early for supper” I think. The guard walks past my cell which is the first one. I get confused, I am the only person in the king’s dungeon. A few minutes later he walks past the other way. He walks back and forth many times. The next time he walks past I decide to see what is going on. “Sir!” I yell out. He comes to my cell and looks around. “What are you doing, I am the only Prisoner here.” I say quietly. The guard just nods at walks back to the stairs to the upper castle. A while later the same guard brings me my breakfast. I look up at him and he looks at me. He quickly looks away and rushes to lock the door and run back upstairs. When he leaves a paper falls from his hand. It flutters onto my plate. I look at Tessie. “What do you think girl, should I look at it?” I pick up the paper “What?” It’s one of my papers, and there is another person's writing. “I am here to help.” I quickly get up. Is it the guard? Is that why I have never seen him? I hear my wall with the window cracking. I spin around the wall crumbles. I see a guy on a horse, he has tanned skin and beautiful features.. I grab Tessie and run out, and the man offers me his hand. I take it and he hoists me up onto the horse. He kicks the horses sides and we gallop away. I love the feeling of my arms around him. It is so comforting. Neither of us say a word. We come to a mountain a while away and the horse stops. The man gets off and helps me down. I turn around and look. I can still see the castle And we stand silent looking at the place where my mother was killed.
“Why did you save me?” I ask. He turns to me.
“My brother was held captive for years before he was...killed, so I decided to avenge his death and help someone who needed me.” He says quietly. We stand quietly again until Tessie barks. I set her down but she barks more. I look around to see what she is barking at. Then I see it. In the near distance. Horses, At least 15 of them.
“Run!” The man yells. I grab Tessie and we rush to the horse. He jumps on, and helps me up. We gallop through the woods. Tessie and I shiver.
“Hold on!” the man says. I put my arm around his waist and hold onto Tessie tightly. I feel the horse lurch as we jump a large stream of water. I glance behind us. No other horses in sight. We come to a little cottage. It looks old but also beautiful. The man stops the horse and ties it to a fence. He takes my hand and leads me into the house.
“Is this yours?” I ask.
“It was my brothers” He says calmly.
“How long has it been?” I say shyly
“1 year” I look at him with pity.
“By the way, My name Is Beatrice, But you can call me Bea.” I offer him my hand. He takes it,
“Eddie” He releases my hand.”So you have asked me questions, now it’s my turn if you don’t mind.” I nod. “Why did the king have you there, what did you do?” I sigh.
“When I was only young, the one of the kings guards killed my brother, We were devastated, one day after I went to school, my mom went to the castle. She blamed the king for my brother’s death. He imprisoned her. Eventually, he killed her. I made the mistake of getting angry at him. He said it was because I had no one else to take care of me and because I will die on my own anyway.”
“ What about your dad? Couldn’t he take care of you?” He asks.
“The thing is, my parents got divorced when I was born and my dad… Is the king.” I explained.
“Oh, yeah that explains it.” he sighed “Well who took care of you while your mom was in prison?” He asked
“I would go to school and spend the day with my mom, and then go home at night” I told him The clock rung, and we realized it was already 11:00. Eddie showed me to the guest room and bid me good night. I sat down on the bed. I haven't had a good night sleep for a while. The next thing I remember is the smell of food drifting into my room.
