Chapter 9

The Confession

When I wake up, it takes me a few minutes to remember where I am. I feel refreshed after a good night sleep. I hear men talking outside my tent.
“We can’t have a woman in camp!” On voice said
“She is married, It’s different.” A second voice argued. I can hear many men bickering. Then one voice quiets them all.
“Guys! Sarah is no average woman. She survived for almost a week in the woods by herself.” I recognise the voice. Is that... Harold?
“But she wasn’t by herself she had the dog!” voices yell.
“We don’t even know anything about her!”
“We do know one thing for sure, she needs us.” Harold says softly. He dismisses the men telling them to get to work. The men scatter. Tessie looks at me and whimpers a little.
“You must be hungry.” I smile as she wags her tail. When I walk out of the tent Harold comes over to me.
“We need to talk.” He says quietly. He looks around before bringing me back inside the tent. Tessie looks at me hoping I brought her some food. I quickly apologize to her telling her i will get some soon.
“Listen closely.” Harold begins. “I’m the leader here. Most of the guys don’t want you here, and if it were anyone else I usually wouldn’t either. There is something about you. It reminds me of my daughter.” He pauses.
“You have a daughter?” I ask stunned at this new piece of information.
“I used to. She was taken from me when she was a baby, along with my wife and older son.”
“I’m very sorry to hear that.” I say. “What was her name.” I ask
“Her name was Beatrice.” He says. “Now as I was saying. You need to prove to them you can take care of yourself until Eddie gets better.”
“Okay I will try my best.” Harold nods and leaves the tent. Tessie looks up at me and wags her tail. I smile. But I can’t help thinking about what Harold said. His daughters name.
“Let’s go get some food now.” I say happily. We walk out of the tent and Go to the food court. I see men staring at me and shaking their heads. I try to ignore it but eventually it gets to me. I try to control myself but I have been known for having a bit of a temper.
“I don’t get it!” I yell. “You all say you don’t know me so you don’t know if you can trust me. You also say I can’t fend for myself. If you don’t know me what right do you have to judge me?” I take my food and storm out of the food court. I run right into Eddie.
“Why in such a hurry?” Eddie asks.
“Why are you out of the hospital?” I counter.
“The doctors say as long as I keep my arm in the sling it should be fine.”
“Are you sure?” I ask.
“Bea...I mean Sarah, Im okay. Don’t worry.” I notice some of the guys staring.
“Kiss me,” I whisper to Eddie. Clearly confused Eddie shrugs, but leans down towards me. I places his good arm on my waist. Then his lips touch mine. A warm feeling spreads throughout my body. As we separate Eddie just looks at me. The other men stop staring and continue on working.
“Was that good?” Eddie asks me joking. I smile and then Tessie yips at my feet.
“Hey girl.” I say. “Let’s go back to the tent and eat.
“I’ll get some food and I’ll meet you there.” Eddie says.
“Wait let me drop of my food so I can help you carry your tray.” I say worried. Eddie puts his hand on my face.
“I’ll meet you there.” I sigh.
“Okay.” I accept that Eddie doesn't want help. I walk back to the tent with Tessie.
A little bit later Eddie comes in. He sits down.
“Let’s eat!” he shouts excitedly. As we eat we catch up on all that had happened while we were apart
“I’m so sorry you had to go through that.” Eddie grabs my hand after I tell him about the wolf.
“I was so scared.” I start to sob and Eddie pulls me close. We sit there on the ground hugging.
“You have no idea how many time I tried to sneak away and come find you.” He runs his fingers through my hair.
“Eddie… I love you.” I say lifting my head to look at him.
“I love you too Bea.” He says. He kisses me. “I never want to leave you again.”
We bring our trays back to the Food court. We hold hands all the way back. When we crawl into the tent Tessie is sitting there wagging her tail. She prances over to us and licks our faces.
“We love you too Tessie!” Eddie says in between laughter.
