Chapter 10
The truth comes out
Eddie and I stay up most of the night talking. We finally decide to go to sleep when Eddie tells me he can see it starting to get light out. When I wake up I look over at Eddie. He is sleeping soundly. I smile. It’s nice to see him at peace. I carefully get up.“I will wake him up with breakfast!” I think to myself. I tell Tessie to stay, and I head to the food court. I quickly get breakfast and hurry back to the tent. When I get back Eddie is awake.
“I wondered where you were.” He smiles at me. We eat quickly. On our way to return the trays Harold sees us and motions us over.
“Just the couple I wanted to see!” He smiles. “I had a meeting with the guys and we have decided you both can stay however long you want!”
“Harold that’s awesome!” I say excited!”
“There is one condition though.” Harold looks at Eddie.
“Let me guess, they want me to work?” Eddie guesses
“Yeah.” Harold shrugs.
“He can’t work! His arm! I won’t allow him to..”
“I accept.” Eddie interrupts. I look at Eddie.
“Ok, Your job will be lumber.” Harold says and then he walks away.
“Eddie, Why?”
“Bea, We need a steady place to live. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“But I don’t want you to get hurt!” I cross my arms. Eddie looks at the ground.
“Your more important.” he whispers.
“Oh Eddie, I may be more important to you, But your more important to me. He looks at me.
“I still won’t change my mind.” He smiles.
“Fine but I will bring you all your meals.” I say stubborn.
“That’s fine with me. Then I don’t have to wait so long to see you everyday.” Eddie winks at me making me blush. We return our trays to the food court.
“Can we go explore? I ask Eddie excited.
“Sure that would be fun! But I have one condition.” He says in a serious tone.
“Oh?” I say questioning his seriousness.
“You have to agree to court me.” He says smiling big.
“Oh that’s a tough one...” I say giggling. “Yes!” Eddie Pulls me into a hug.
“Well let’s go exploring!” He says. We walk into the woods. I pick flowers along the way.
“Do you hear that?” I ask Eddie.
“Yeah, I think it’s a stream!”
“I’ll race you!” I shout as I take off.
“Hey you got a head start no fair!” Eddie yells from behind. When I reach the stream I jump in without hesitation. Eddie jumps in not too long after.
“I win!” I say as I tread water. Eddie splashes me so I splash him back. After 15 minutes we hop out and sit on the riverbank.
“You are amazing Bea.” he says.
“Who’s Bea?” We hear a voice behind us. We turn and see Harold standing there. I look at Eddie unsure of what to say.
“No lies. What is going on.” Harold says his face clearly showing his anger.
“We have to tell him.” He says. Harold rolls his pant leg up and sits next to us. I tell him the whole story. Only leaving out the parts about Eddie and me. Harold just looks at me.
“I’m sorry. I know we shouldn’t have lied. I was just trying to protect us.
“I understand.” Harold says. “What I don’t understand is how a father could do that to his daughter.”
“I don’t either, but Beatrice is strong and smart. She escaped him.” Eddie says.
“Wait, So your real name is Beatrice?” Harold asks.
“Yeah, my mother Roleena always loved that name.” I say remembering how often my mother would tell me the story of how I was named.
“What did you just say?” Harold’s eyes grow wide.
“My mom always liked that name.” I repeat.
“No, I mean her name.” He says.
“Roleena?” I say confused. Harold grabs me and hugs me.
“Your her!” He pulls away and looks at my face.
“I don’t know what your talking about!” I say startled and confused.
“No wonder you seemed familiar!” He smiles at me. “Your my daughter Beatrice.”
