Prologue
My life has never really been an easy one. It all started when I was about seven.“Daddy’s home!” I yelled Running to the door. My father came through the door and threw his stuff on the floor. My mother came in and glared at him.
“You Get done with work at 5 P.M., Its 8 P.M.! Where were you!?” She said in a stern tone.
“I Went to the bar with a couple of my friends. Just chill out woman.” He walks to the livingroom and plops down on the couch.
“I was worried. I let Faith stay up late because she wanted to say goodnight.”
“Well that’s on you.” My father said grumpily. “Get me some soup.” He demanded. My mother always did what my father asked. She always respected him. This time was different.
“Get it yourself!” She yelled. “I’m tired of you using me! You are a drunk and you are a slob!” She shouted.
“What did you just say?” My father stood up.
“I said I’m tired of being your maid!” Father rose his hand and slapped Mother. I was so terrified. I could tell my mother was too. She quickly rushed over to me.
“It’s time for bed. Faith.” She said in a gentle tone. I didn't complain. I knew what happened when I complained. My mother was always so gentle to me.
“I love you Momma.” I said. She smiled and kissed my forehead.
“Goodnight love.” As I tried to fall asleep I could hear my parents fighting. It scared me. Then I heard the front door open and close again. I quietly hopped out of bed and peered through the crack in my door. I could see my mom kneeling on the floor. Even as a seven year old I could tell she was crying. I opened my door and went and hugged her.
“I’m okay honey.” She said.
“Where did Daddy go?” I ask, wondering where my father would go in the middle of the night. My mom sighs.
“I don’t know. He will be back soon. Go back to sleep.” I did what I was told, but I didn’t fall asleep easily. I just remember the fear I always felt around my dad. As a young child I didn’t understand why my parents were always fighting. My dad continued to abuse my mother day after day, week after week.
When I was nine my mother sat me down on the couch one day after school.
“I want to tell you some news before Daddy gets home.” She smiled at me.
“Okay.” I looked at her, and saw the joy in her face.
“I’m going to have a baby!” She exclaimed happily. The news stunned me.
I’m going to be a big sister?” I asked, afraid that I wouldn’t be good enough. My mom nodded. A few hours later my father got home. He was drunk like usual.
“Dear, I need to talk to you.” My mom said cheerfully.
“Just say what you need to say and get it over with.” My dad huffed.
“I’m pregnant!” My dad stood there, looking at my mom. I was afraid of what was going to happen. Then the unexpected happened. A smile came across my dad’s face. He hugged my mom and kissed her.
It was a dififcult pregnancy. My father still wasn’t responsible so I had to do a lot for Mom. It was a hard nine months. One summer day when my father was at work my mom ran into my room.
“It’s time!” She bellowed. I didn’t know what to do so I just stood there like a fool. My mother sighed and went to grab the hospital bag. I followed her.
“Get in the car!” She screamed. I hastily ran to the car. We were not a rich family. Our car was a very junky car. It was a silver 1983 volkswagen GTI. I sat In the passenger seat and waited for mom. After about ten minutes she came out. We sped to the hospital as fast as we could. When we got there mom signed in. She asked me to call my father, then went with a nurse, leaving me alone. I found a hospital phone and called my dad at work. The person who answered the phone asked who I wanted to speak with.
“Steve Witt, My father.” I said hurriedly. There was a pause on the other end.
“I’m sorry honey he isn’t here.” The man said after a little while.. I hung up the phone, confused and scared. I went and sat down in the waiting room. About a hour later a doctor came over to me.
“Are you Faith?” He asked quietly. I nodded “Do you have any other family coming?” I shrug unsure if my father will be coming. “I’m sorry, your mother and sister didn’t make it.” I looked at him shocked at the news. The doctor looked around not sure what to do. Thankfully a female nurse saw what was going on and came and gave me a big hug.
“Would you like me to wait with you until your dad gets here?” She asked, her voice light and smooth. I nodded, not wanting to speak to anyone but my father. Minutes later a police officer came and spoke to me.
“Are you Faith Witt?” I nod. “Where is your mother?” The nurse tells him the news. His face falls. “I am so sorry, Faith. Your father was just killed in a car accident.”
