I Won’t Leave You
Eddie tells me to go get Tessie who has been enjoying being tied outside. I nod quickly and rushed over to her. I untie her and picked her up. Boy she is getting heavier.I carry her back over to Eddie. He looks sad and maybe a little bit scared.
“The king is on his way here. I thought coming here would be far enough but I was wrong.” He said guiltily.
“It’s ok Eddie. You should go. Take Tessie. She will have a better life with you.” I say
“You want me to leave you here? The king will kill you.” He comes to me and takes my free hand. “Bea, I have never felt the way I feel when I am with you before.”
“Eddie,” I pull my hand away. “He will always come after us. We will never feel safe. I am his only heir to the throne.”
“I won’t leave you Bea.’
“YOU HAVE TO!” I yell as I begin to sob. I pet Tessie who is licking the tears of my face. Eddie picks me up and puts me onto his horse and climbs on behind me.
“When I first rescued you I told myself I would protect you even if it means losing my life.” Eddie kicked the horse with his heels and off we went. Tessie isn’t very happy about leaving, she looks at me with sad eyes. As Eddie holds the reins with his arms around me. We slow down as the sky darkens. I lean back resting my head on Eddie’s chest. My eyes close and I let sleep come. I wake up when the horse suddenly stops. Eddie gets off the horse and he helps me down.
“Time to set up camp.” He says quietly. We create a little shelter using large sticks and one of the blankets we packed. We start a fire using smaller sticks and a match. We lay down and Tessie Comes to lay between us. I drift off to sleep listening to the sounds of nature. In the morning I wake up before Eddie. I sit up and look around. I crawl out of our shelter. My stomach rumbles. Tessie comes over to me wagging her tail.
“I guess I should get the fire going again.” I tell her. I take another match and lite the fire. I go over to the backpack and take out the pan and a couple eggs. I put the fan on the fire and wait for it to warm up a little. I crack the eggs into the pan. Eddie Finally wakes up and comes to sit with me. Tessie prants over to him and rubs her face on his hand expecting to get petted. Eddie and I both laugh. When the eggs are finally done we take the pan off the fire and eat. I notice Eddie has stopped eating and is looking at me.
“What?” I ask him as I blush.
“I’m sorry we couldn’t stay at the cabin, I thought we would be safe there. I didn’t want to save you, and just have to run away. We will get away from the king Bea.” He grabs my hand. I nod and pull away from him.
“I’m going to start packing up.” I tell him as I stand up. He stands up to follow me.
“I’ll help.” He starts cleaning up the pan as I gather the blankets we had used. Tessie runs to me and jumps on me. I laugh and pet her. Eddie Grabs the backpack and puts it onto the horse. He gets on and reaches down to help me and Tessie. Once we are on the horse We gallop of. We have been riding for about an hour now and Tessie isn’t very happy with me. I say her name and she doesn't respond. She won’t even look at me. I sigh and pet her. A while later we ride into a town. Eddie gets off the horse and offers me a hand. I jump off by myself and Eddie ties the horse to a fence near a store.
“I don’t have a lot of money, but it should be enough to buy us some food.” Eddie says as he walks into the store. I stay by the horse with Tessie. I set her down so she can use the bathroom. As I bend down to pick her up I see a man walking towards me.
“Hey you!” He shouts at me “You match the description of a prisoner the king is looking for!” I stand there frightened. Eddie comes out of the store and rushes over. He puts the fresh food in the backpack and turns to the man.
“What is the problem here?” Eddie asks. The man explains to Eddie that the king sent a letter to every town with a description of a missing prisoner and a $1,000 reward. Then the man asks who I am. “This is my…” Eddie stutters “My wife. We just got married about a week ago.” Eddie puts his arm around me and turns me and we kiss. The man believes us and he leaves. We get back on the horse and as we ride of I am certain of one thing. We can’t go to any more towns.
