Chapter 11

Goodbye

“What do you mean I’m your daughter. I just told you my father is the king!”
“Is your brother’s name Harry?” He asks.
“How do you know that?” I ask.
“Where do you think he got that name from?” He says. It suddenly hits me. I hug him tightly. The rest of the day I spend with Harold getting to know him. We play chess. (I win), We talk about my mom. He tells. me things about her that I never knew. We talk until supper. I am happier than I have been in a while. I found my dad. And he loves me!
“We better get to supper.” Harold says. “Let’s go see that boyfriend of yours.” we laugh. When we get to the food court We get our food and sit down next to Eddie. When we finish we put our trays away. Then we hear a familiar and frightening sound. We all rush outside. We listen as the sound of galloping horses gets louder and louder. Some of the men rush back into the food court. Then the first couple horses come out of the woods. A guard I recognise as the head guard gets off his horse Harold steps in front of me. The head guard pulls his revolver out. Before I can even shout no, he pulls the trigger. The next thing I know, Harold turns around. I see the spot where he has been hit. Then the guard fires again and again. Harold falls to the ground. I start crying. I feel myself being pulled away from him. I hear Eddie’s voice but it seems distant.
“We have to get out of here.” I cry as he pulls me away. It all feels like slow motion. I try to escape from Eddie.
“I have to say goodbye!” I yell.
“I’m sorry Bea.” He keeps pulling me. We get to the horses. When he lets me to to unhook them I run. I run as fast as I can until Eddie tackles me from behind. I cry and scream at him to let me go. He just pulls me into a hug and lets me cry. I try to pull away but Eddie keeps me in his arms. Eventually I give up. I go boneless in his arms.
“Now I’ve had to watch both of my parents die.” I whimper. Then I have a realization. “Tessie is in the tent!” I scream! Eddie stands up and grabs my hand. We run toward the tent. When we get there I see Tessie. Shy is lying on the ground limp. I rush to her and funt a small stab wound.
“She isn’t breathing.” Eddie says. “But we have to get out of here.” I nod and stand up. We run back to the horses. Eddie helps me up onto one. He then gets on behind me.
“I love you.” I say. Then Eddie kicks the horses sides and off we go. We ride until dark. We get off the horse and I don’t say a word.
“Let’s set up camp.” Eddie says. I nod and we go off to find supplies. We return to the campsite at the same time. Eddie keeps talking to me as we set up camp but I don’t feel like talking. Eventually I start getting frustrated with Eddie. Then I lose my temper.
“Just shut up Eddie!” I yell and Eddie is surprised. “I lost everything today, don’t you realize that?”
“I’m sorry, I am just trying to be there for you.” He says quietly.
“Well I don’t want you to be!”
“What do you mean?” Eddie comes over to me.
“Just leave!” I say angry.
“You don’t mean that.” Eddie looks worried.
“Yes I do! Why does everyone think I can’t take care of myself?” I yell.
“I didn’t say that! I think you are totally capable.” Eddie reaches his hand to my face to put my long brown hair behind my ear, but I slap his hand away.
“If you think I’m capable then leave.” I turn away from him.
“Fine, but just so you know if I leave now we will never see eachother again.” I pause but because I’m stubborn I reply in a nasty way.
“That’s all I’m asking.” I hear Eddie sniffle as he starts to walk away. “Oh, and take the horse.” I say. I hear Eddie get on the horse and gallop away. I turn back but I’m to late.
“What have I done?!” I ask myself. I continue setting up camp. I’m alone, and what I thought would feel nice doesn’t. I cry. I huddle inside my little stick fort. I think about what Eddie said. How we wont ever see eachother again. I cry and cry. I don’t stop crying for about three days. At this point I’m very hungry and thirsty. I try to sleep but I am in so much pain.
“I just want to die!” I yell to the sky. “Why can’t i just die?” I can hear Eddie’s voice in my head.
“Because you matter Bea.”
“No! Get out!” I scream.
“I rescued you. I won’t let you die.” Then I drift off to sleep Eddie’s voice in my head.
