Chapter 7
Facing Giants
I wake up to Tessie moving.
“Hey girl, it’s ok.” I say trying to comfort her.
I try to think about what my plan is. Do I want to leave the woods and continue on the path? Do I want to stay here and wait for Eddie?
“What if Eddie doesn’t come back?” I ask Tessie. She looks up at me and licks my hand.
“You’re right.” I exclaim pleased with Tessie helping me. “Eddie saved me! I have to find him.” I stand up. I set Tessie down. I start yelling Eddie’s name. I start to loose hope. He is probably long gone. He is probably happy to be rid of his burden. I know I have to go somewhere. The king knows about where I am, after that town called me in. I can’t bear never seeing Eddie again. I also can’t bear going back to the dungeon. I have to keep going, without Eddie. As I walk tears roll down my face. I think about the kiss I shared with Eddie. My stomach growls bringing me back to reality. I have to find food, and water. I keep walking, hoping to find a stream. It’s getting colder and Tessie is getting tired, so I pick her up.
“We have to keep going girl.” I tell her. As I walk, leaves fall from the trees. It must be fall. Tessie is shivering in my arms. I hug her close to me. My bear arms get goose bumps. The forest is getting darker and darker. I don’t want to stop, but I know I have to sometime. When it’s too dark to see I decide to stop for the day. I sit down on the cold damp ground. Tessie crawls into my lap and I pull her close. I look around. My eyes are adjusting enough to see the trees. The forest is thick and big. I lay down and Tessie curls up on my stomach. I am tired so I quickly fall asleep. When I awake, Tessie crawls up to my face and licks me. I laugh and sit up quickly.
“Time to get a move on!” I say to her. I hope we can make it out of the forest by the end of the day, but I don't know how much we have left to go. We start walking, Tessie prancing by my feet. I smile happy that Tessie healed fast. It’s been 5 days since I've seen Eddie. I remember the feeling I had when I lost my brother, and my mom.
“Why do I have the feeling of loss?” I think to myself. “I don’t even know Eddie that well.” I can’t help but worry about him. I think about how Tessie saved me from that wolf. He doesn’t have anyone to save him. I look at Tessie, who is happily prancing beside me. She has a scar on her back. We keep walking. I hear a snap of a stick somewhere in the woods. My heart races. Tessie doesn’t seem to worried, so I assume it’s not another wolf. I gasp having s sudden thought.
“Eddie!?” I call out, hoping my friend is out there looking for me.
“Who are you?” A low gravelly voice asks from behind me. I spin around, and find myself facing this giant man. He is around 6’5”, he has a sloppy beard, huge feet, and big hands. Tessie starts to tremble and sits beside me. I’m 5’3”, so a lot of people seem big to me, but this man towers over me.
“Stop staring and answer me!” The man grumbles. “Who are you, and who are you looking for?” I quickly think of a reply.
“My name is...Sarah.” I tell him.The man’s face softens when he hears the made up name.
“You don’t have to be afraid, I want to help.” He smiles for a brief second. For some reason I feel as though I can trust him.
“I’m looking for my... husband.” I tell him remembering Eddie’s story. “We got married two weeks go, he went off hunting and I can’t find him.”
“What does he look like?” He asks. I tell him about his beautiful hair, his perfect skin, and perfect personality.
“You must really love him.” He winks, and I bush. He looks down at my feet. “Your dog?”
“Yes her name is Tessie.”
“May I pet her?” He asks. I nod. The man leans down and strokes the little dog. He sees the scar and looks at me with inquiry. I quickly make up a story about Eddie training her to become a hunting dog. The man laughs somewhat knowingly. The man stands up. I lean down and pick up Tessie.
“There is a refugee town a couple miles east, We can ask around there to see if anyone has seen your husband.
“You have no idea how much this means to me sir.” I say grateful
“More than you know.” He replies.
