Chapter 4
Run
I got out of bed and stretched. I yawned and looked at the clock. 9:30! I dashed out of the room and ran right into Eddie.
“Sorry.” I mumble, embarrassed.
“No problem.” he says smiling. “I was just coming to wake you up for breakfast anyway.”
“Oh”. I say shyly He takes my hand and leads me into the kitchen. It smells so good. Eddie must see the look on my face because he smiles and shows me what he is making.
“I don’t know what it is.” I confess
“It’s my secret recipe for coffee cake.” He says proudly. He sees that I’m still confused. “Have you ever had coffee cake? He asks.
“Well I’ve had coffee, when I was younger took a sip of my mom’s when she wasn’t looking, but I thought it was gross. Is it anything like that?
“Oh, no, well not my recipe. Here have a piece.” He cuts a piece and gives it to me. It’s amazing, and I thank him again. The cake is small so we eat the whole thing. Then we sit on the couch and start talking. We talk about many things; food, families, hope, love, and hobbies. I find out we actually have something in common: we both like to sing, though it is forbidden.
“ I have a question for you, if you don’t mind.” Eddie says.
“Ok go ahead”
“Why is music forbidden other than on the king’s holidays? I mean, it just doesn’t make sense.” He questions.
“Well My mother used to love music. It was her everything, Second only to her family. When my mother died the king forbid music. Even the holidays are hard for him. I guess he truly loved her but she came in second when it came to his job. Now that I think about it, He never told anyone about us. He made mother say that her husband had left us.”
“Wow, That’s terrible.” Eddie takes my hand in his and we sit there for a while, just holding hands and looking into each other's eyes. It felt like an hour had passed when Eddie pulled away.
A week later, we had become really good friends. We were hanging out in the living room
“I should make some lunch.” Eddie says abruptly.
“Can I help?” I ask. “It’s been a while.” He smiles at me.
“We make a great team.” He tells me as we cook. When we finish he tells me it’s time for the real test, the taste test. We set the wooden circular table in the kitchen and sit down to eat. The food was fantastic!
“I’m glad you were the one that saved me.” I tell him.
“Me too.” He agrees. We finish eating and put the dishes away. The house we are staying inis cozy and homey. It almost made me miss my home. I am glad I am here with Eddie. He saved me and I am very grateful. Eddie grabs my hand and takes me out the back door on the west side of the house. There was a porch that overlooked a beautiful river. On the porch was a cedar porch swing connected to the ceiling with chains. “Maybe sometime we can sit out here during sunset.” He says smiling.
“I would like that” I smile at him.
“You know something Bea?” He asked me. I don’t really understand that question. People ask, “do you know something?” But of course you know something! Everyone has a brain! Instead of saying that, I just go with it and answer him.
“Huh.”
“You are amazing.” He tells me. “You went through a lot, but you can still smile and laugh.” I shrug and we go back inside. Eddie decides to start supper. I watch him as he prepares meat-loaf. My mouth waters at the thought of real meat. Eddie puts the meatloaf in, and pauses.
“We need something for desert!” He shouts. “But what?”
“I know something.” I say shyly. “My mom taught me, It’s called Baked Alaska.”
He smiles as I get ingredients. I’m quite surprised that he has everything but I don’t say anything. When everything is ready we sit down and eat. The food is great. I feel spoiled. We talk as we eat. I take a drink of my water and Eddie tells me that through the bottom of the glass I look like I have a pig nose. I laugh and water comes out my nose. We both laugh even harder. After we are done eating, Eddie put the leftovers in the fridge and we walk outside. We sit on the swing he has on his porch and just talk. We talk for a long, long, time. I looked down at my hands sitting on my lap, Eddie took my hands, and I look up at him. Our eyes met. Every thought I had left my head. I felt safe. Suddenly, a man rode up on a horse, and I became very frightened, but Eddie stood up as the man got off the horse. They hugged. Eddie brought the man over to me so I stood up to greet him. He said hello and then turned back to Eddie. He whispered something to Eddie and they both looked uneasy. They continued talking in low voices, so I could not hear. Although I did hear one word: run.
That was a GREAT chapter!
